FAQ List: All Questions Post Your Question
This document is designed to discuss the requirements for generator sizing when used with single-phase Symmetra UPS systems.

A generator, Genset, should be sized to 1.5 times the size of the Symmetra's full capacity.

Many standard off-the-shelf Gensets are sized at 0.8 power factor for continuous duty operation ( > 30 mins of runtime ). When the Genset is sized < 1.5 times Symmetra frame size, the interaction of the Symmetra PFC, power factor corrected, circuitry with output impendence of the generator, the generator output waveform becomes distorted and triggers alarms like Bypass Voltage and Frequency out of range.

Due to these reasons, the recommendation is to size the generator at 1.5 times the Symmetra's full capacity and not exceed 75% of the generator's load capacity. (This load includes other devices that may be powered by the generator but not by the UPS such as AC, heating, and lighting).

What are APC’s plans to develop On-Line UPS without internal batteries?
The end-user demands the flexibility of adding local (generic) battery packs.
APC is working on UX model without internal battery packs. This product should be available by the end of Q1, 2002.

Can APC provide External Bypass (Service Bypass) to work with Smart-UPS On-Line 1&2 kVA models?
We are working with an external vendor to develop a standalone service bypass module.

Is APC planning to add manual bypass to Smart-UPS On-Line?

There are no plans to add manual bypass switch to the 1 & 2kVA Smart-UPS On-Line models. However the Smart-UPS can be put into bypass mode through PowerChute Plus, SNMP card and Terminal Mode. The Smart-UPS On-Line also has automatic bypass built-in.

APC intends to put manual bypass in 3kVA and higher models.

What is the transfer time for internal bypass? What type of switch is used for the bypass?
Mechanical relay and typical transfer time is 2 msec.

Is Redundant Switch compatible with Smart-UPS On-Line?
Yes.

Can we use the Smart-UPS On-Line as an inverter only?
Smart-UPS On-Line was designed to be used as a UPS only and therefore it is not cost-optimized to be used as a inverter. If the customer requires inverter then we should recommend CE+T inverters.

Does the system have separate battery charger or does the rectifier take care of the battery charging also? If the load is 50% will the recharge time be less?
The battery charger is separate from the rectifier. Smart-UPS On-Line has a 100-Watt battery charger. This battery charger operates off the DC Bus at the output side of the PFC circuit. Because the charger is completely separate from the rectifier, the battery recharge time is independent of the load plugged into the UPS.

What is battery charging current?
Typically it is 2 Amps.

What is the size of the battery charger?
Smart-UPS On-Line uses a 100-Watt battery charger.
